BrainPOP Science
3 BrainPOP Science Units That are Out of This World
In a galaxy far, far away…
Well, not too far because your space explorers (ok, students) don’t have to leave their seats for these lessons. They can visit the International Space Station, take a trip around the sun, or study the moon with just a click and their thinking helmets on!
With BrainPOP Science, middle school students explore real-world (or universal) phenomena like actual scientists and engineers. Investigations will guide students through the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) process, where they learn to analyze information, draw conclusions from their observations, and clearly communicate their findings. Plus, strengthening their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities at the same time.
So, where to start? If you haven’t guessed already, we’re going to jump into our Space Science lessons. Get ready for liftoff!
The Universe and Its Galaxies
In this unit, students learn the role of gravity in the origin of the universe as well as the properties of galaxies and stars. They observe the different types of galaxies and how they form, see how the Milky Way differs from other galaxies, and tour a simulation about exoplanets.
The Earth-Moon-Sun System
Students dive deep into the causes and effects of orbital motion in the Earth-Sun-Moon system, including seasons, tides, and eclipses. They explain the phases of the moon and why they’re so predictable, observe patterns of planetary movements, and examine data manipulatives to determine the relationship between a location’s average monthly daylength and temperature.
Our Solar System
Students explore the composition of objects in our solar system as well as the role gravity plays in orbital motion. They observe simplified models of the solar system and galaxy to identify the relationship between distance, mass, and gravitational force. All to answer a very interesting question: “What keeps the International Space Station in orbit around Earth?”
One Small Step…
Teachers, don’t worry, you won’t be alone on your space adventures. Every investigation comes with teaching resources to help you guide your students as they navigate new scientific concepts–including an embedded clickable CER rubric and formative assessments, standard-aligned teacher guides, and opportunities for differentiation.
See how BrainPOP Science brings space science to life in your classroom, while cultivating an enduring love for learning as students see the impact of their studies in the world around them.
