Every explorer needs a trusty map, whether they are investigating the great outdoors, or are exploring the world from home. Understanding maps is a great skill to have! With these BrainPOP at Home activities, guide your kids in creating maps of their own and they’ll be orienteering experts in no time.

Tip: Ask Questions!


Try using active viewing strategies when watching BrainPOP movies with your kids to help them build more comprehension. During or after watching the movies, try asking questions like:


  • Which types of maps are easiest for you to read?

  • Which ones are the hardest?

  • How can we figure out what direction our door/window/street is facing?

Create a Map


Time to get oriented! Have your kids explore their own space and create a map of any room in the home. Try including any of these details:

  • Labels and symbols

  • A compass

  • Latitude and longitude points


Tip: Make Adjustments!


To make this activity easier, create a map of just one room.


To make it harder, try mapping out your entire home, expanding it to include your neighborhood, or even including scale for sizing.
